Vishu marks the bigining of new year in accordance with Kolla Varsham (the Malayalam calendar). This festival is celebrated in a grand manner in Kerala and Tulu. The important ritual in vishu is Vishukkani. Vishnu means ‘equal’ and Kani means ‘the first sight’. People believe that Sighting the auspicious thing brings luck through out the year.
Vishu is celebrated on first day of medam month. On this occasion, the sun’s transits into the Meda Raasi (Mesha – Aries). In 2017, vishu is on Friday, 14th April 2017.
