Makara Sankranti is one of the famous harvest festivals that is celebrated all across India. It is known with different names in different parts of the country like Maghi, Pongal,Makara Vilaku etc. Makra Sankranti also marks the start of the day for Devas which is also known as Uttarayana Punya Kaalam.
A lot of sweets are prepared and distribute on Makara Sankranti. Prepartion of Pongal in Tamilnadu is a mandate on Makara Sankranti. In Andhra Pradesh flying of kites, Bommala Koluvu or display of different kinds of dolls and toys, Gobbemaalu (small pyramids made out of cow dung) are placed on big colourful Rangolis. In other places taking bath in holy rivers is a ritual. In Kerala, Makara Sankranti is the day when Makara Jyothi darshan of Lord Ayyappa happens.
