Tamil New Year is celebrated with great fervor and delight among the people around the world. It is celebrated on first day of Chithirai month and also called as Varusha pirappu/ Chithirai Tiru-naal.
Every Tamil month starts on sankranti day. Chithirai month is also starts on Sankranti day i.e on Mesha (aries) Sankranti. This year, Puthandu / Varusha Pirappu is observed on Monday, 14th April 2015.
People decorate their homes with kolams and adore their houses with fresh mango leaves to welcome the new year. Using neem flowers and raw mangoes in this festival indicates growth and prosperity during this part of the year. Kanni, kuthu villakku and listening to panchang are the main rituals of this day.
