Surya Sashti is observed on Shukla Paksha Shasti (Sixth day of waxing moon period) during the month of Bhadrapada. This festival is celebrated in respect of Surya Bhagawan (Sun God). In 2012, Surya Sashti date falls on September 21.
Ratha Sapthami, Bhanu Saptami and Surya Sashti are the hindu festivals dedicated to Surya Bhagawan. On the day, Devotees offer prayers to sun god during Sunrise. People fast on the day till Sunset. Gayatri Mantra, Aditya hridayam and other mantras dedicated to Surya Bhagawan are chanted on the day.
