Pitru Paksha is a 15 day period, when Hindus pray and perform some rituals for their ancestors. First day of this period is known as the Pratipada Shraddha and the last day of Pitru Paksha is known as Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya amavasya. Gaya, Varanasi, Rameshwaram, Haridwar, Allahabad and Rishikesh are the popular places for Pitru Paksha Shraddha rituals.

Pratipada Shraddha is also called as Prathami Shraddh or Paadyami Shraddha. According to North Indian calenders pitru paksha begins on Dark fortnight of ashwin month and according to south indian calenders it is on Dark fortnight of Bhadrapada month. This year, Pratipada Shraddh date is Friday, 20th September 2013.
