Pitru Paksha (also known as Mahalaya Paksha) is a Drak fortnight period, when Hindus offer Shraddha to their ancestors. This spans from the first Moon day to the Amavasya day and each day is ruled by a specific phase of the Moon.
Both North Indians and South Indians perform Shraddha ritual on similar days, nomenclature of the months are different. In South Indian Amavasyant calendar it falls in the month of Bhadrapada and in North Indian Purnimant calendar this period falls in the month of Ashwin.
