Margazhi is the ninth month in traditional Tamil calendar, which comes after Karthikai masam. This month starts when sun transits through Sagittarius sign i.e on Dhanu sankranti day. Margazhi masam is the last month of Dakshinayana. This month ends on Makar Sankranti day. This year Margazhi masam starts on Sunday, 16th December 2012 and ends on Monday, 14th January 2013.

Margali masam is considered as the auspicious Tamil month. During this month, people wake up early in the morning and perform special pujas. Povai nombu is also observed during this month. Tiruppavai and Tiruvempavai rendered every day of the month in the temples and as well as in the homes.

Vaikunta Ekadasi, Hanumath Jayanthi and Bhogi pandigai are the major festivals during the Margazhi month. Devotees perform early morning bhajanai. People go in groups singing in praise of God. Arudra Darisanam is also the most auspicious day during this month. This month is also known as Soonya masam so that no functions are performed during this month. Margazhi month is also known for Shabarimala Yatra.
