Margashira Masam is the month, in which moon enters Mrugashira Nakshatra. Lord Krishna mentioned about this month in Bhagavadgita as ” Masanam Margasheersham”. This is the ninth and one of the most auspicious months in hindu lunar calender. Devotees worship God Vishnu and render Vishnu Sahasranama during this month. People observe Lakshmi Vrat on Thursdays of this month.

As per south Indian amavasyant calenders, this year Margashira masam begins on 03rd December, 2013 and ends on 01st January, 2014. Amavasyant calenders fallowed in ndhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka. River baths considered auspicious during this month. Subramanya Shasti, Hanumath Vratham, Datta Jayanti, Mokshada Ekadashi and Gita Jayanti are the major festivals according to this calender.

According to Purnimant calenders, Margashirsha month in Starts on 18th November 2013 and ends on 16th December 2013. Purnimant Calenders fallowed in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar. Kala Bhairava Ashtami, Subramanya Shasti, Datta Jayanti, Mokshada Ekadashi and Gita Jayanti are the major festivals in this calender. According to the both calenders Margashira Purnima is observed on the same day.
