The day when the sun enters the Makara Rashi is celebrated as Makara Sankranthi. Makara Sankranti will be celebrated on Sunday, 15th January 2023.
Sankranti in Sanskrit mean transition and as sun transits from Dhanu Rashi (Saggittarius) to Makara Rashi (Capricorn) it is known as Makara Sankranti. Makara Sankranti is celebrated all over India with different names. Makara Sankranti also marks as one of the harvest days and is also known as Harvest festival. It is believed that the crop is sold and money will come to the farmers on Sankranti day and hence the celebrations.
There are different rituals in different parts of the country. Some prepare Pongal, some prepare Kichidi, some bath in the rivers etc. In Andhra Pradesh Makara Sankranthi is celebrated by drawing big Rangolis in front of the house. Kites are flied in some parts of the state. Lot of Sweets are prepared among them Ariselu, Appalu are common. In some parts Bommala Koluvu (display of all the dolls and idols) is also arranged in homes.
