Karwa Chauth is a Vrat (Fast) observed by married women. It is observed through out the world, but is more popular in Northern parts of India. Karwa chauth is celebrated in fourth day of dark fortnight in the month of Kartik. According to Amavasyant calenders it falls in the month of Ashwin. During the karwa chauth, woman applies henna in her hair and dresses like a bride. They observe a strict fast for prosperity of their husbands. This fast is broken only after sighting the moon. This festival arrives 9 days before Diwali and also known as Kartik ki chauth.
