Karthigai Deepam is festival of lights in Tamil Nadu and traditional oil lamps (Agal vilakkus) are lit in every house in the evening after sunset. People believe that these lamps protect them from evil forces. On this day sisters pray for their brothers. Also Maha deepam (huge fire lamp) lit on Tiruvannamalai Hills.
