The tenth day of the Druga Navarati in the month of Aswayuja or Ashwin is celebrated as Dasara. Ashweyuja sukla paksha Dasami is celebrated as Dasara. The tenth day of the Sharad Navaratri festival of Goddess Durga is Dasara. Dasara of this year will be celebrated on Thursday, 7th October, 2038.
Dasara is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Lord Rama over the demon Ravana and rescuing Sita from Ravana. Effigies of Ravana and Kumbhakarna are prepared and burnt on Dasara or Dusshera. The burning of Ravana and Kumbhakarna in the Rama Leela Maidan is the most famous one on Dasara. Thousands of devotees would witness this burning of Ravana. Dasara marks the victory of good over evil.
In Kolkata Dasara is the day when Goddess Durga is immersed or the Visarjan day of Goddess Durga after Goddess Durga is worshipped with devotion for nine days. One of the most auspicious days to enter into new business or new venture is Dasara. It is a common belief that any thing that is started on Dasara would be successful. In some parts of the country , worshipping of vehicles and instruments pertaining to all professions is a practice. The other name of Dasara is Vijaya Dasami.
