The tenth day of the waxing phase of the moon of the Aswayuja month or Ashweyuja sukla Dasami is observed as Dasara. Dasara is the tenth day of the Sarad Navaratri festival. Dasara is one of the important days in the Navaratri festival and is the tenth day, the day after the Navaratri. Dasara of Sharad Navratri of this year will be observed on Tuesday, 11th  October, 2016.

Dasara is the day when Lord Rama killed the demon Ravana thereby rescuing Sita. Dasara marks the victory of good over evil. This same scene is repeated by burning the effigies of Ravana and Kumbhakarna on Dasara. The ritual of burning the effigies of Ravana and Kumbhakarna  performed at Ram Leela Maidan is very famous. Thousands of devotees would come to Ram Leela maidan on Dasara to witness the burning.

Visarjan of Goddess Durga after worshipping her for  nine days is done on Dussera. Goddess Durga is immersed in the lakes or rivers nearby on Dasara. Worshipping of instruments, machines in factories and vehicles is a common ritual in some parts of the country. This is known as Ayudha Puja.

Dasara is a symbol of victory and hence any work that is started on Dasara is sure to be a success. The other two days which are considered to be auspicious to start a work are Ugadi or Gudi Padwa and Akshaya Tritiya. Dasara is also known as Vijaya Dasami.
