Chaitra masam is first month in the Hindu lunar calendar. On the Purnima day of this month chitra nakshtra persists with the moon, hence it is named as Chaitra month. Chaitram is also known as Madhu masam and it is the starting month of the spring season (Vasanta Rutu).

As per Purnimant calenders, Chaitra month in begins on 28th March 2013 and ends on 25th April 2013. Purnimant Calender fallowed in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar. Sheetala Ashtami, Papamochani Ekadashi, Chaitra Navaratri, Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, Gauri Puja (Gangaur), Yamuna Chhath, Rama Navami, Kamada Ekadashi, Hanuman Jayanti are the auspicious days during this month.

According to Amavasyant calenders, Chaitra masam starts on 11th April 2013 and ends on 9th May 2013. This calender fallowed by Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka. Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, Chaitra Navaratri, Gauri Puja (Gangaur), Yamuna Chhath, Rama Navami, Kamada Ekadashi, Hanuman Jayanti Varuthini Ekadashi are the auspicious days during the Chaitra Masam.

Chaitra Masam is an imporatant month for Hindus. It is believed that Lord Brahma created this universe on first day of the chaitra month (Ugadi). Several different deities are worshiped during this month. Lord Brahma, God Ganesha, Lord Sri Rama, Lord Hanuman, Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga and Goddess Gouri are worshiped in this month.
