Lord Balarama is the brother of Lord Krishna. It is believed that Lord Kirshna is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Lord Balarama is the incarnation of Adisesha the great snake on which the Lord Vishnu sleeps. Lord Balarama is believed to be born on Shravan Purnima and hence celebrated as Balarama Jayanthi. Balrama carries a plough as his weapon. He was a great warrior and was considered to be a master of the Gadha weapon. He also taught Duryodhana the tricks and gave insight into the secrets of how best Gadha can be used.

The legend goes that Adisesha requests Lord Vishnu that as he was the younger brother Lakshmana in his previous Ram Avatar(incarnation) this time he would like to be his elder brother. Pleased by him Lord Vishnu grants him the boon and that is how Balarama is born as a elder brother to Krishna.

Shravan Purnima is also celebrated as Jandhyala Purnima, Gamha Purnima, Narali Purnima, Jhulan Purnima, Kajari Purnima.
