Amavasya is the last day of the  Krishna paksha of the masa or month of the Hindu calendar. It marks the end of the waxing phase of the  moon. Amavasya Is considered to be auspicious for performing Tarpana and Shraddha rituals. Few people perform fast on this day. A few festivals lije Diwali celebrated on Amavasya day.

This month Amavasya date is Tuesday, 02nd  August, 2016. According to Amavasyant calenders it is called Ashadha Amavasya. As per purnimant calenders it is called as Shravana Amavasya.
