Akshaya Tritiya is an auspicious festival and observed on the third day of the bright fortnight in the hindu lunar month of Vaishaka. On this day people wake up early in the morning, take ritual bath at home or in the near by rivers or lakes.
God Vishnu is worshiped in different forms on Akshaya Tritiya day. Usually Varaha, Lakshmi Narasimha, Krishna and Lakshmi Narayana avatars are worshiped with sandalwood paste. Special pujas and rituals are observed at Lord Vishnu temples. Reciting Vishnu sahasra nama stotra and other stotras related to lord Vishnu is considered meritorious. Buying Gold and Silver on akshaya tritiya day considered auspicious become popular in these days.
Akshaya Tritiya is also known for Daan (donation) and Punaya activities. Performing Udaka Kumbh daan (Pot with water), wheat, Food grains, curd rice, Paada Raksha, umbrella, clothes, Go (cow), Bhu (Land), Hiranya (Gold/silver) on this day is considered to be sacred and provide everlasting (Akshaya) merits.
On Akshaya tritiya day, few people perform tarpana (Tila) on this day. Devotees also observe fast on this day. Eating Only one meal is prescribed for this day. In northern parts of India this day is considered auspicious for Marriages. In Orissa it is observed as a agricultural festival.
