Kurma Jayanti is the celebration of birth anniversary of God Kurma (Tortoise). Kurma was the second incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu appeared in this form during Satya Yuga. Each year, Kurma Jayanti is celebrated on vaishaka purnima day i.e full moon day of the hindu lunar month of Vaishaka. This year, Kurma Jayanti is on Wednesday, 3rd May 2034.
Lord vishnu worn this avatar to become a base for the mandara mountain during the Ksheera Sagara Manthan (churning of the milk Ocean). Gods and demons churnded the ocean with the help of Mandara (mountain), Kurma (Lord Vishnu) and Vasuki (serpent King) to get the Amrit. Special pujas are performed and special events are organized on this day in Lord Vishnu Temples.
