The day when sun enters the Makara Rashi is celebrated as Makara Sankranthi. Makara Sankranti will be celebrated on Sunday, 14th January 2018.
Sankranti in Sanskrit mean transition. On this day sun transits from Dhanu Rashi (Saggittarius) to Makara Rashi (Capricorn). This festival is celebrated all over India with different names. This festival is also considered as Harvest festival. It is believed that the the farmers sell their crop and get money by the Sankranti day and hence the celebrations.
There are different rituals for Makar Sankranti in different parts of the country. River baths, preparing Pongal, Kichidi, Flying kites etc. In Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu Makara Sankranthi is celebrated by drawing big Rangolis (kolams) in front of the house. Lot of Sweets are prepared among them Ariselu, Appalu are common. In some parts Bommala Koluvu (display of all the dolls and idols) is also arranged in homes.
