The new year of a Maharashtrian starts on Gudi Padwa. A Gudi is displayed prominently in every house hold of Maharashtra on Gudi Padwa. A Gudi is prepared by tying a bamboo with a bright green or yellow cloth along with Ghatti (Sugar Crystals), Neem leaves, Mango twig and a garland of red flowers. At the top of the Bamboo stick a copper or silver pot is placed in inverted position. This Gudi is displayed along the window or on the terrace or even outside the house on Gudi Padwa.
A paste made from Neem leaves, Jaggery and Tamirind is prepared and consumed on Gudi Padwa.Puran Poli and Shrikand are the dishes that are prepared on Gudi Padwa. Gudi Padwa is celebrated with different names like Ugadi, Cheti Chand, Thappan etc.
