The day when the sun enters the Makara Rashi is celebrated as Makara Sankranthi. This year Makara Sankranti falls on Monday, 14th January 2013.
Sankranti in Sanskrit means transition. Transition of Sun from Dhanu Rashi (Saggittarius) to Makara Rashi (Capricorn) is known as Makara Sankranti. Makara Sankranti is celebrated all over India with different names. Makara Sankranti is also known as one of the harvest festival. It is believed that the crop is sold and money will come to the farmers on Sankranti day and hence the celebrations.
There are different Sankranti rituals in different parts of the country. Some prepare Pongal, some prepare Kichidi, A few bath in the rivers etc. In Andhra Pradesh Makara Sankranthi is celebrated by drawing Rangolis in front of the house. Kites are flied in some parts of the state. Lot of Sweets are prepared among them Ariselu, Appalu are common. In some parts Bommala Koluvu (display of all the dolls and idols) is also arranged at homes.
