The biggest festival of Lord Shiva is Maha Shivaratri. Magaha Bahula Chaturdasi is celebrated as Maha Shivaratri. Maha Shivaratri falls on the fouteenth day of the wanning moon phase of Magha month of Telugu Calendar. As per Tamil Calendar the month is Masi, the day is the fouteenth day of Krishna Paksha. The date of Maha Shivaratri is Sunday, 11th March, 2040.
The rituals to be followed on Maha Shivaratri are as follows:
1)Devotees should fast for the whole day. This is a strict fast and hence cannot even drink water.
2)Eka Rudra Abhishekam has to be performed in the night. Bilva Dala is a favorite of Lord Shiva and hence offering a Bilva Dala would please the Lord. Bilva Dala is Bel leaf.
3)Fruits are to be offered as Naivedyam to Lord Shiva. Fruits that are offered as Naivedyam should only be consumed as food for the night.
4)Devotees should be awake whole night enchanting the name of Lord Shiva or Maha Mruthyunjaya Mantram.
5)At Lingodbhava Kalam i.e 00:00 hrs performing Abhishekam is considered to be highly auspicious.
6)Devotees should sleep in the night of the next day only.
