Maha Navami is the ninth day of the Durga Navaratri festival of the month of Ashwin or Ashweyuja. Maha Navami is celebrated on Aswayuja sukla paksha Navami. Maha Navami is the most important day of the Sharad Navaratri festival of Goddess Durga and is the ninth day of Navaratri. This year Maha Navami is celebrated on Friday, 27th September, 2047.
It is believed that Goddess Durga is worshipped as Mahishasura Mardini on Maha Navami. It is on Maha Navami that the demon Mahishasura was killed by Goddess Durga and got the name Mahishasura Mardini. Maha Navami is also the last and final day of Sharad Navratri festival.
In some parts of the country, worshipping of little girls is done called Kanya Puja. On Maha Navami Goddess Durga is worshipped as Aparajita Devi which means the one that can never by defeated. Also Sugar cane stalks are offered to Goddess Aparajita Devi on Maha Navami.
