The ninth day of the waxing phase of the moon of the Aswayuja month or Ashweyuja sukla Navami is observed as Maha Navami. Maha Navami is the ninth day of the Sarad Navaratri festival. Maha Navami is one of the important days in the Navaratri festival and is the ninth day of the Navaratri. Maha Navami of Sharad Navratri of this year will be observed on Sunday, 28th September, 2036.
By killing the demon Mahishasura on Maha Navami Goddess Durga is worshipped as Mahishasura Mardini, Mardini means the one who killed. Maha Navami is the last day of the Sharad Navaratri. Kanya Puja is performed in some parts of the country on Maha Navami. On Kanya Puja little girls are worshipped thinking them to be Goddess Durga.
Goddess Durga is also worshipped as Aparajitha Devi on Maha Navami. Aparajita is a Sanskrit word which means the one who can never be defeated. Sugar cane stalks are offered to Goddess Aparajitha on Maha Navami.
