The ninth day of the Druga Navarati in the month of Aswayuja or Ashwin is celebrated as Maha Navami. Ashweyuja sukla paksha Navami is celebrated as Maha Navami. The ninth day of the Sharad Navaratri festival of Goddess Durga is Maha Navami. Maha Navami of this year will be celebrated on Sunday, 2nd October, 2033.
On Maha Navami Goddess Durga is believed to have killed the asura or demon called Mahishasura. From that time onwards Goddess Durga is worshipped as Mahishasura Mardini in few parts of the country. Maha Navami is the last day in the Sharad Navaratri festival.
In some parts of the country Goddess Durga is worshipped as Aparajitha Devi , the meaning of Aparajitha is one who is never defeated. Sugar cane stalks are offered as Naivedyam to Aparajitha Devi on Maha Navami. There is a practice of worshipping little girls as Goddess Durga on Maha Navami and this ritual is known as Kanya Pujan.
