It is on Maha Navami that the demon Mahishasura was killed by Goddess Durga. Then on wards Goddess Durga is worshipped as Mahishasura Mardini by her devotees. Maha Navami is the last day of the Sharad Navaratri festival.
In few parts of the country, Goddess Durga is wroshipped in the form of Aparajitha Devi. Sugar cane stalks are offered to Goddess Aparajita on Maha Navami. Little girls are worshipped as Goddess Durga in some parts of the country. The ritual of worshipping the little girls is called as Kanya Puja.
