Dasara as the name suggests is the tenth (Dasami) day of the waxing phase of moon in the month of Aswayuja. Dasara is celebrated on Aswayuja sukla paksha Dasami. Dasara is celebrated on the tenth day of Sharad Navaratri festival. Dasara in this year will be celebrated on Thursday, 22nd October, 2015.
The day after Sharad Navratri is Dasara. Dasara is celebrated to mark the victory of Rama over Ravana. Dasara is the day when Lord Rama killed Ravana and rescued Sita. On Dasara it is a common ritual to burnt he effigies of Ravana and his brother Kumbhakarna. This burning of effigies of Ravana and Kumbhakarna in Rama Leela Maidan is very famous. The same is done in various parts of the country.
The celebrations of Durga navarati come to an end on Dasara. In West Bengal, Goddess Durga, who is worshipped for nine days with devotion is immersed on Dasara in nearby rivers or lakes. Dasara is the day of Visarjan of Goddess Durga.
The common belief among the Hindus is that if Dasara is a symbol of success and hence any new business or other new ventures started on Dasara would be successful. There are also two more days which are believed to bring success those are Akshaya Tritiya and Ugadi or Gudi Padwa.
Ayudha Puja, where in vehicles and other instruments and machines in the factory are worshipped is performed on Dasara. Dasara is celebrated as Vijaya Dasami in few places across India.
