According to Amavasyant calenders, Indira ekadasi is observed on Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha. In purnimant calenders it is the eleventh day of the waning phase of the moon in the month of Ashwin. This year, Indira Ekadashi is on 30th September 2013.
It is believed that by observing the Ekadashi Vrat on this day would help the dead ancestors who are in hell because of their sins to go to heaven. OR the sins of the ancestors would be forgiven and they would go to heaven.
