Bhadrapada Sukla Paksha Cahviti  or the fourth day of the waxing phase of the moon of the month of Bhadrapada of Lunar calendar is celebrated as Vinayaka Chavithi or Ganesh Chaturthi.  In 2015, Vinayaka Chavithi Falls on September 17th.

Vinayaka Chavithi is celebrated on the occasion of Ganesha being made the head of all Vighnas and also the birthday of Lord Vinayaka or Ganesha.

Vinayaka Chavithi is one of the most famous festivals in India dedicated to God Vinayaka or Ganesha. On Vinayaka Chaviti every devotee would  clean and decorate their houses to welcome God Vinayaka. Devotees prefer to  buy Clay Vinayaka idols to perform puja. Some also prefer to prepare the idol of Lord Vinayaka or Ganesha from clay brought from fields with their own hands. Vinayaka Mandapam (Where Vinayaka idol is installed) is specially decorated.

The common ritual on Vinayaka Chaviti is to perform puja to the clay idol. The puja has to be done with 21 different kinds of leaves. This puja is also known as Eka Vimsati Patrani Puja. Then Lord Ganesh is offered  Naivedyam. Undrallu,Kudumulu are a mandate as Naivedyam for Lord Ganesha on Vinayaka Cahvithi.

Devotees also have to read the Vinayaka Vrat Katha to escape from the curse of Lord Parvathi of seeing the moon on the day of Vinayaka Cahvithi. Few people observe fast on the day of Vinayaka Chavithi. Every one sing Ganesha Stotrams to please Vinayaka.
