Vaishakha maasam has a lot of significance in Hindu philosophy and is the second month in the hindu lunar calender. Purnima (Full Moon day) during Vaishakha masam is known as Mahaa Vaisakhi, during this day moon comes nearer to the constellation of Vishakha star and hence this month is known as Vaishakha.
Purnimant calenders are fallowed in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar. Here Vaishakha Masam starts on 12th April 2017 and ends on 11th May 2017. Akshaya tritiya, Ganga Saptami, Buddha Purnima (Vaishakha Purnima), and varuthini Ekadashi are the major festivals during this month.
Amavasyant calenders are fallowed in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and here Vaishakha masam starts on 27th April 2017 and ends on 26th May 2017. Parashuram Jayanthi, Akshaya Tritiya, Ganga Sapthami, Sita navami, Mohini Ekadashi, Nrushimha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, Narada Jayanti, Apara Ekadashi, Vat Satri Vrat and Shani Jayanti are the major festivals in this month.
Prime Deity of Vaishakha month is Lord Vishnu. Vishnu appeared in three incarnations (Parushuram, Nrusimha and kurma) during this month. Vaishakha snan, Worshiping Lord Vishnu with sandalwood paste, thila daan and tila homa are considered highly meritorious and mukthi daayaka.
