The Second day of the four day Pongal festival is celebrated as Thai Pongal. This day marks the beginning of the Tamil month of Thai. In 2014, Surya Pongal is on January 14. This day is also called as Surya Pongal or Perum Pongal.
On the Thai Pongal day, Tamilians wake up in the early, decorate their homes with banana and mango leaves. Draw beautiful kolams on the floor using rice flour. Every member in the family take the ritual bath and wear new cloths. Pongal means the boiling over or Spill Over. It is a ritual that boiling of the milk and rice till it spill over, during the month of Thai. It is a symbol of the abundance and prosperity.
