Sandhi Puja is a main and integral part of Durga Puja during Navratri. Sandhi Puja is usually performed between Ashtami and Navami Tithis. Sandhi puja duration is of 48 minutes. It starts when only last 24 minutes of Ashtami (Eighth Lunar Day) left and finished on the Navami after first 24 minutes are finished. Navami is ninth day of Lunar calender and also spelled as Nabami in Bengali.

Sandhi means “juncture”. Sandhi puja got this name because it is performed at the juncture of the 8th and 9th lunar day. Puja time is called as Sandhi Kaal or Sandhikhan. People belive that during Sandhikhan Godess Durga Killed Demons Chando and Mundo. Thus Durga Devi acquired the name of Chamunda (also called as Chamundi).

Sandhi Puja 2012 Date

Sandhi Puja is performed during the Navratri. Sandhi puja is observed on Ashtami and Navami tithi’s of  Shukla Paksha in Ashwin month. This year Sandhi puja falls on Monday, 22nd October, 2012.

During the Sandhi Puja Time Godess Durga is Worshiped in one of her most powerful forms, called Chamunda. This Puja time is known as Sandhikhan.

There is Legend behind Sandhi Puja. When the Godess Durga and Demon Mahishasura were engaged in a a fierce and long battle, Mundo and Chando are attacked the Goddess from behind. These two demons were Generals of Mahishasura. At the time of attack Godess took the form of Chamunda and killed them. In this form Godess looked as a brightly glowing woman with a garland around her neck, hair knotted on her head with a crescent on it, Tilak on her forehead. She has golden earrings and clad in a yellow saari, radiated a golden glow. Her ten hands adorned with ten different weapons. With the anger, her face turned in to blue. From the third eye, another form of godess emerged holding a shield and a large falchion. She had sunken red eyes, a bloody tongue and a large face.

This is Happened at the juncture of the 8th and 9th lunar day. This is called Sandhikhan and Sandhi Puja is performed on the same time every year.

What are things needed to perform Sandhi Puja?

For Performing Sandhi Puja we require

  1. 108 lotus flowers
  2. Fruits
  3. Dry rice grains for noibiddo
  4. 108 Earthen Lamps
  5. Jewelry
  6. Clothes
  7. Hibiscus garlands and
  8. Wood apple (bel) leaves.
