The seventh day of waxing phase of the moon in the month of Magha or Magha Suddha Saptami is celebrated as Ratha Saptami. Ratha Saptami in this year is observed on Monday, 26th January, 2015.
The following rituals are to be observed during Ratha Saptami
1)Taking of head bath before sunrise by placing Ekka or Arka or Jilledu leaves on seven different parts of the body (two on shoulder, two on thighs, one on chest ,one on back and one over the head) and reciting the following mantra “Sapta Sapta Maha Sapta, Sapta Dweepa Vasundhra, Saptaarka Parnamaadyaa, Saptami Rahda Saptami”.
2)The above process has to be repeated for three times.
3)Milk must be boiled and allowed to overflow. While over flowing one should pray to the sun God.
4)This should be repeated for three times.
5)Parvanam must be cooked from the remaining milk.
6)Rangoli in the form of Rath are drawn in front of houses.
7)Observing a fast on this day is auspicious.
