Kurma Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary Kurma Avatar. Kurma is the second avatar in ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. Kurma jayanti is observed on the full moon day (purnima) of the Vaishaka month. This year, Kurma Jayanti is on Sunday, 29th April 2018. Buddha jayanti is also observed on the Vaishaka purnima day.
Kurma means Tortoise. Lord Vishnu appeared in this form during satya yuga to help the gods and demons in churning of the milk ocean. Mountain Mandara was used as the churning stick and Vasuki (serpent king) as the churning thread. To keep the mountain afloat, Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Kurma. Kurma Jayanthi is celebrated with much gusto in Lord Vishnu temples around the world.
