Amla and Tulasi

The 12th day of the waxing phase of the moon of Karthika Masa is called as the Ksheerabadi Dwadasi. This is also called as Brindavana Dwadasi.

It is believed that when Gods and Demons were churning the ksheerasagara (ocean of milk) for Amrutham (Nectar) lot of animals, things and people came out, like kamadhenuvu, kalpavruskham, Iravatam(white elephant the vehicle of Indra) etc.

Lakshmi devi also was the output of this churning. Hence she is also called as the daughter of the ocean. It is believed that Lord Vishnu had married Goddess Lakshmi on this day and hence people celebrate this as the Ksheerabdi Dwadasi.

Hence people on this day people keep Tulasi supposed to be another form of Lakshmi and a branch of Goosebery (Amla) supposed to be another form of Vishnu together and perform pooja, imagining it as if a marriage is being done.

It is also believed that in the evening, Lord Vishnu along with Goddess Lakshmi devi would come to the Brindavan, and hence it is advised to visit Brindavan as all the other Gods would be present to offer their prayers also.

Also this is the day when people after observing the Utthana Ekadashi fast, would break the fast.

People perform the Ksheerabdi Dwadasi Vratham.

It is good to offer Amla fruit to God Vishnu and also light a MahaJyothi made from 360 wicks.
