Datta Jayanti Story

Datta Jayanthi Katha, Legend of Dattatreya Jayanti

In heaven Sage Narada used to tell the gods story about Anasuya’s fidelity to her husband. This provoked the jealous of wives of trimurthi i.e Sarasvati, Laxmi, and Parvati. They decided to lower Anasuya’s reputation. They sent Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva to earth to disgrace Anasuya.

Three gods became guests and visited atri house, when atri was not in his house. Anasuya welcomed them and  requested them to have a meal. Then they said that they would eat only on one condition. The strange condition was that Anasuya should serve them the food without any clothes on. Then Anasuya made the Hindu trinity as small babies and fed them without any cloth on her body.

When Sage Atri came and knew the whole thing, he created all babies into a single baby. This form of Trimurti is known as Dattatrya Swamy. With their powers, Atri and Anasuya recreated Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
