The first day of four day Pongal festival is called as Bhogi Pongal. According to Tamil calender, it falls on the last day of the Tamil month Margazhi. This is a harvest festival and people pray rain god Indra on this day. In 2014, Bhogi Pongal is on January 13.
Bhogi pongal is celebrated in a grand manner by tamil people around the world. It is also celebrated as Bhogi and Magh Bihu in other parts of the India. On this day people decorate their homes and draw beautiful kolams on the streets and door ways. The most significant event during the Bhogi Pongal day is the bonfire. People throw all unused household items into this Bhogi bonfire.
