Amavasya

This is the last day of the telugu month. This is the no moon day of the month. It is considered to be best suited for performing certain religious rituals on this day. The rituals if practised by men would yield multi-fold benefits to them.
This day is also considered the best day to pray forefathers. On this day Tharpan (leaving sesame seeds with water) is offered to forefathers. This has to be done on the mid day only. No other time is suitable for this. This day is considered as inauspicious for traveling and hence most of the religious people would not travel on this day. Similarly there was a practice of not doing any work on this day and many of the traditional workers observe a holiday on Amavasya. The gold smiths today also observe Amavasya as a holiday. In olden days even the judges used to take a holiday on Amavasya.

Diwali or Deepawali is celebrated on the Asweeja Amavasya as a mark of Lord Krishnas victory over Narakasura.

Mahalaya Amavasya the Amavasya of the Bhadrapada month of the telugu calendar is considered to be the best for pleasing the forefathers and offering them a thrapan. If we are not able to perform the normal ritual for our forefathers, which is normally done on the day they pass away, it is adviced to perform it on this day and it would please the forefathers.
