Adi Amavasya, Adi Amavasi, New moon day in Aadi month, No moon day in the month of Aadi

The vedic tamil month of Aadi occurs when the is in the sign of Kataka (Cancer). This month is considered highly auspicious for spiritual activities. New moon day of this month (Aadi Amavasya) is known for holy dip in the rivers, Shraddha and tarpan rituals for the ancestors.

On Aadi amavasya day people also perform special abhishekams to Lord muruga. Devotees believe that one will be purified and all sins will be washed away by taking a holy dip in the Shanmuga River in Palani on the Aadi Amavasya day. Also a few people tonsure their head in respect of the god.

In Tamilnadu, people gather in a large numbers at river banks and tirthams like Agni Theertham (Rameswaram) and Thriveni Sangamam (Kanyakumari). Ancestor rituals are also performed at the river banks only. There rituals may vary bit from region to region and community to community.
